National Divorce Day (Divorce Monday)
What is Divorce Day?
It’s that time of year once again. National Divorce Day comes every year, yet somehow the majesty of the holidays keeps us preoccupied with family and gorging ourselves with goodies year after year. The holiday season truly does control our lives and our emotions for a period of time. The good feelings of familial love and giving can make friends out of enemies. Those feelings can even keep a relationship together, even if only until a short time after the holidays.
Many find the best way to get over the sluggish stuffed-with-holiday-food feeling is to shed some dead weight after the holiday season. Not a New Year’s resolution in the form of a gym membership you’ll never use. You know the kind of dead weight. This is the kind who is never home, never helps out, only cares about him/her self, is abusive and/or controlling. That’s the weight many people want to remove from their lives immediately after the extended family has flown back to Chicago. In fact, divorce immediately after the holidays is so common that the Monday after New Year’s earns some unofficial fame as Divorce Monday or National Divorce Day. This means that many spouses will be Googling divorce on their smartphones before the last piece of confetti hits the ground this year.
What does National Divorce Day mean for me?
Although this article pokes fun at Divorce Monday, divorce is serious and extremely stressful for many people every year. It’s very telling that so many more people file for divorce after the New Year. Many people want to get through one more Christmas as a family. Others have family coming into town so they keep the relationship going until the family members are back home to avoid complications. Maybe some even think that there will be a Christmas miracle to save the relationship. In any case, many people forego the typical New Year’s resolution for a fresh start in their love lives.
Like many other New Year’s resolutions, getting a divorce may not go as planned. Also like many New Year’s resolutions, divorces can be ugly and expensive. Paying for an attorney in a divorce can get quite expensive. It can be almost as expensive as not paying for an attorney.
Many people who get divorced believe that it will be cheaper to represent themselves instead of hiring a professional. They don’t realize that the long-term cost of forgoing an attorney can be very high. A divorce can drive a person insane if they have no one to manage it for them, not to mention everything they risk. People can lose money, property, and rights when they choose to represent themselves. When the divorce involves children, forgoing an attorney can even cause irreparable harm to the relationship between parent and child. Many people agree to parenting plans that allow them hardly any time with their child because they don’t know any better.
